Fluo yellow urine most often comes from excess vitamin B2 (riboflavin) removed from your kidneys. This phenomenon is benign. Other factors may explain:
- Taking food supplements or certain medicines
- Dehydration
- Certain foods or dyes
- More rarely, liver or urinary disorders
We will identify possible causes and tell you when to consult.
Urine yellow fluo: what does this unusual color mean?
Your urine contains 90-95% water. Its normal colour varies from very pale yellow to straw yellow thanks to l
A fluo yellow colour indicates a high concentration of colouring substances. If it appears after taking a supplement, it is normal. If it persists for several days despite good hydration, consult.
The most common causes of fluo yellow urine
In 90% of cases, the explanation is simple: food supplements. A multivitamin or vitamin B complex taken in the morning explains this color.
Dehydration concentrates your urine and intensifies its tint. We regularly observe this in our clients who train without drinking enough.
Some medicines (antibiotics, anti-inflammatory drugs) also temporarily alter the urinary colour.
Role of vitamins and dietary supplements
Vitamin B2 (riboflavin) is the main contributor. Hydrosoluble, it does not store: your body uses what it needs (about 1.6 mg a day) and eliminates the rest via urine.
A supplement containing 50 to 100 mg of riboflavin produces a massive excess that dramatically colores your urine.
Our advice : split your dose into two daily doses to reduce the coloring effect.
Influence of certain foods and dyes
Foods rich in carotenoids (concentrated carrot juice) give an orange shade. Artificial dyes in energy drinks or candies also intensify the color.
We find that yellow or green isotonic drinks, rich in vitamins B, often explain the surprise of our clients after their sports session.
Dehydration: a frequently underestimated factor
Dehydration concentrates waste in your urine. The urobiline becomes more visible, giving a dark yellow. With vitamins B in addition, the color fluo intensifies.
Populations at risk : babies, elderly people, sportsmen, people with fever or diarrhoea.
Associated signs intense thirst, dry mouth, fatigue, headache, reduced urinary volume.
Medicinal products that may change the colour of urine
Several medicines color urine:
- Rifampicin : orange-red
- Nitrofurantoin : brownish
- Sulfasalazine : orange
- Sene laxatives : yellowish to brown
- Methylene blue : blue-green
- Doxorubicin Red
Check the package leaflet for your medicines. Never stop treatment without medical advice.
When fluo yellow urine becomes a medical warning signal
Fluo yellow urine isolated after vitamin supplement is benign.
Situation to be monitored :
- Persistence several days without supplement and with good hydration
- Brown colour (hepatic problem or severe dehydration)
- Red or rosé (possible presence of blood)
- General symptoms: fever, abdominal pain, jaundice, extreme fatigue
Symptoms associated with absolutely monitoring
Urinary infection :
- Unsettled and odourless urine
- Frequent urination
- Burns at urination
- Pelvic pain
- Fever
Renal or hepatic problem :
- Lower back pain
- Ankle oedema
- Urinary volume decreased
- Yellow
- Persistent nausea
Check quickly if you are pregnant and have these symptoms.
Diseases and disorders that may be related to this colouring
Rarely (less than 5% of cases), abnormal urine reveals:
- Liver disorders : hepatitis, cholestasis, poisoning
- Complex infections : purple urine syndrome (very rare)
- Intoxication : lead, mercury
Most of the time the explanation is simple and benign.
Practical tips for finding normal urine
Step 1 Drink a large glass of water immediately and hydrate regularly.
Step 2 : Identify the source (complement, medicine, coloured drink).
Step 3 : Stop temporarily the suspect supplement for 24-48 hours.
Step 4 : Monitor evolution for 2-3 days. If color persists, consult.
How can we moisturize every day?
Quantity : about 2 liters a day, to adapt according to your activity. A sportsman may need 3-4 liters.
Distribution : one drink every 2-3 hours, as soon as you wake up.
During the effort : 150-250 ml every 15-20 minutes.
Reliable indicator Your urine must be pale yellow, almost transparent.
Adjust your diet and supplements
Reduce dose : go to a less concentrated supplement or take it every other day.
Split Divide your dose into two daily doses.
Prioritise feeding : A varied diet usually covers your vitamin needs.
Limit beverages and foods containing artificial dyes.
