What is an intimate itching?

An intimate itching corresponds to an unpleasant sensation in the vulva, sometimes accompanied by irritation, burns or tingling. This discomfort can be located on large lips, small lips, clitoris or the entrance of the vagina.

We observe that itching can be punctual or recurrent, light or intense. They usually result from an imbalance in the vaginal flora, whose normal pH varies between 3.8 and 4.5. When this pH changes, good bacteria (lactobacilli) decrease, leaving room for pathogenic fungi and bacteria.

The female intimate area naturally houses more than 50 species of different microorganisms. This fragile ecosystem can be disturbed by multiple factors, triggering the annoying symptoms we all know.

What are the most common causes?

We identify several triggers for intimate itching:

Infectious causes accounted for 60% of cases. Vaginal mycosis, mainly caused by Candida albicans, affects 3 in 4 women at least once. Bacterial vaginosis, due to a proliferation of anaerobic bacteria, affects about 30% of women of childbearing age.

Hormonal factors play a major role. Hormonal fluctuations during the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, menopause or contraceptive use may alter vaginal pH and promote itching.

Inadequate hygiene is a common cause. An excess of hygiene (more than 2 toilets per day) or the use of unsuitable products (scented soaps, classic shower gels) disturb the natural balance.

External factors such as synthetic clothing, too tight underwear, prolonged moisture or scented hygienic protections create an environment conducive to irritation.

Stress and fatigue weaken the immune system and may trigger itching outbreaks, especially in women prone to recurrent mycosis.

When should we consult a doctor?

We recommend that you consult quickly in several situations:

If itching persists for more than 48 hours despite natural remedies, or if it is accompanied by worrying symptoms: heavy loss of "clay milk" appearance, strong or unpleasant smell, intense burns, pelvic pain, bleeding outside the menstrual period.

Consultation is also required in the event of recurrent itching (more than 4 episodes per year), persistent red plaques, eczema or suspected genital psoriasis. Pregnant women should be particularly vigilant and should consult when the first symptoms appear.

Do not hesitate to make an appointment if you have doubts about the origin of the itching, especially after an unprotected sexual intercourse, as some sexually transmitted infections may start with itching.

The most effective grandmother remedies

Apple cider vinegar is one of our favorite remedies. Its richness in natural acids and enzymes gives it recognized antifungal and antibacterial properties. Dilute a tablespoon into a lukewarm glass of water and use this solution as a gentle rinse after the intimate toilet, or soak in a straight compress to apply 5 to 10 minutes.

Soda bicarbonate effectively soothes itching thanks to its alkaline action. Add a teaspoon (about 5g) to a warm 15 minute seat bath. This method is particularly suitable for irritations related to excessive acidity.

Unsweetened yogurt is a particularly effective ancestral remedy against fungus. Rich in lactobacilli, it naturally reacidifies the vaginal flora. Apply it directly to the vulva for 15 minutes before rinsing with clear water, or consume 2 pots a day to strengthen your intestinal microbiota.

L-aloe vera offers exceptional moisturizing, healing and anti-inflammatory properties. Use only pure, fragrance-free, and no additives. Apply a thin layer to the irritated area 2 to 3 times a day. You can also dilute 2 tablespoons of gel in a seat bath.

Natural solutions to rebalance vaginal flora

Virgin coconut oil has natural antifungal and antibacterial properties thanks to the lauric acid it contains. Apply a small amount to the vulva after the intimate toilet. It hydrates deeply while creating a protective barrier against pathogens.

Probiotics represent a modern approach to traditional remedies. We recommend the daily consumption of fermented foods: kefir, sauerkraut, miso, or the taking of nutritional supplements specific to vaginal flora containing at least 10 billion lactobacilli per capsule.

Camomile infusion soothes irritation thanks to its anti-inflammatory compounds. Prepare a concentrated infusion (3 sachets for 250ml water), let cool completely and use it in a compress or seat bath for 10 to 15 minutes.

Seat baths and soothing home solutions

The seat bath is a particularly effective ancestral technique to relieve intimate itching. We offer several proven recipes:

Colloidal oat bath : Mix 100g of oatmeal flakes finely and add this powder to a warm water seat bath. Oats contain natural saponins with soothing and anti-inflammatory properties. Stay immersed for 15 to 20 minutes.

Sea salt bath Dissolve 2 tablespoons of unrefined sea salt in a seat bath. This solution helps to reduce inflammation and has mild antiseptic properties. Be careful to rinse after use.

Bath with medicinal plants Mix chamomile, calendula and thyme equally. Prepare a decoction with 50g of this mixture in 1 litre boiling water, let infuse 15 minutes, filter and add to your warm seat bath.

Vegetable and essential oils that relieve

Doonagre oil and burrache excellent for treating intimate drought that can cause itching. These oils rich in essential fatty acids restore the skin barrier and maintain natural hydration. Apply a few drops to the vulva in the evening.

Calendula oily macerate has remarkable healing and anti-inflammatory properties. This traditional preparation effectively calms itching and promotes repair of irritated tissues. Use it as a soft massage twice a day.

Pure shea butter protects and limits inflammation thanks to its natural active compounds (cinnamic acids, triterpenes). Choose a raw, unrefined shea butter and apply it to the irritated areas.

Concerning essential oils, we recommend the utmost caution. Tea tree essential oil can be used very diluted (up to 2-3 drops in a seat bath), but it remains contraindicated in pregnant and lactating women. True lavender essential oil suitable for sensitive skin and can be used in the same proportions.

Probiotics and nutrition to prevent recurrence

A targeted nutritional approach significantly reduces the recurrence of intimate itching. We recommend a diet rich in prebiotics and probiotics to maintain a balanced microbiota.

Food to be preferred : unsweetened fermented yogurt and milk, milk or water kefir, raw sauerkraut, miso, tempeh, omega-3-rich fatty fish (sardines, mackerel), leafy green vegetables, garlic and onion for their natural antifungal properties.

Food to be limited : refined sugar and artificial sweeteners that promote the proliferation of Candida albicans, alcohol that disturbs the balance of flora, ultra-processed foods poor in essential nutrients.

We also recommend taking specific probiotic supplements containing strains adapted to the vaginal flora: Lactobacillus crispatus, L. assari, L. jensenii, L. iners. A 30-day cure of 10 billion units per day is generally effective.

Intimate hygiene habits to adopt

The intimate daily toilet must remain simple: once a day with warm water and a mild cleansing product specially formulated for the intimate area, at pH 4 to 5.5. Absolutely avoid classic soaps, perfumed or antiseptic shower gels that destroy the protective flora.

Drying is of paramount importance. Gently stamp with a clean and soft towel, without rubbing. Allow to dry for a few minutes in the open air before dressing to avoid moisture that is conducive to infection.

The choice of underwear directly influences intimate comfort. Prefer organic cotton, change it daily and avoid thongs that encourage the migration of intestinal bacteria to the vaginal area.

During the rules, change your sanitary protections every 4 hours maximum, alternate buffers and towels, and prefer products without perfume or bleaching agents. Menstrual cutting is an excellent ecological and healthy alternative.

Errors to avoid worsening itching

Vaginal showers the most common error. This practice, which is still widespread, completely destroys natural vaginal flora and increases the risk of infections by 73% according to recent epidemiological studies.

Excessive self-medication with over-the-counter antifungals can mask other infections and create resistance. Limit yourself to treatment per episode and see if symptoms persist.

Intensive scraping aggravate inflammation and can create micro-leases that promote bacterial overinfections. Prefer to tap gently or apply cold for temporary relief.

Use of inappropriate products comme les lingettes intimes parfumées, les déodorants intimes ou les lubrifiants contenant de la glycérine perturbent l’équilibre naturel et entretiennent les démangeaisons.

Natural remedies: precautions and limitations

How to relieve and prevent lasting?
