Communication, this invisible link that boosts the well-being of players

Sport

As online games multiply and virtual communities expand, communication between players has become an essential lever of fun and balance. Far from isolated clichés, interactions in connected worlds offer gamers a space for exchanges, complicity and cooperation. Recent studies show that these social ties, woven in the game, contribute directly to the overall well-being of players.

Online games where communication is central

Many online games for adults promote the exchange between players. In multiplayer video games, speech, strategic exchanges or simply user-friendliness prevail. Titles like League of Legends, Call of Duty: Warzone, Final Fantasy XIV or online multiplayer mode GTA V This dynamic is perfectly illustrated. These games require coordination, listening and trust to achieve a common goal, or on the contrary to compete in a stimulating competitive environment.

On the other hand, online strategy and card games place communication on another level: psychological reading, tactical thinking and mutual respect between players. Whether it's online poker (Texas Hold PokerStars, the leader of online poker, of Hearthstone, of Magic : The Gathering Arena or chess on Chess.com, these games seek subtle exchanges, fine observation and a true understanding of others' behavior.

Other categories promote more free and social interactions, such as multiplayer open worlds (Red Dead Online, No Mans Sky) or cooperative adventure games like It takes two or Divinity: Original Sin 2. These universes encourage collaboration, the expression of emotions and the sharing of common experiences.

When to talk, listen and cooperate improves the gaming experience

Several studies have shown that video games can strengthen the social capital of players (Domahidi et al., 2014; Trepte et al., 2012) and provide them with significant emotional support (O的Connor et al., 2015). Moreover, according to several academic studies on the uses and rewards of video games, social interaction is a major motivation for players.

Voice or text discussions, encouragement and shared strategies foster a sense of belonging and recognition. It is often these relationships that encourage players to stay connected or even return to the game regularly.

The researchers also point out that communication between players works on three levels of well-being: social, emotional and personal.

  • At the social level, it reinforces the feeling of inclusion and creates lasting friendships, sometimes stronger than those of everyday life.
  • Emotionally, it primarily generates positive emotions — joy, humor, pride, euphoria — much more frequent than negative emotions such as anger or frustration.
  • Finally, on a personal level, it gives a sense to playful activity: players feel valued, listened to and supported, which prolongs their commitment and fun to play.

Communication between players is not limited to technical or strategic exchanges: it is a real social link, an invisible engine of online well-being. Talking, cooperating or simply sharing a moment of humor becomes a source of balance and pleasure. These interactions recall that, behind each avatar or virtual map, there are humans in search of exchange.
