An NHL game officially lasts 60 minutes, divided into 3 periods of 20 minutes each. But be careful: between game stops, advertising breaks and intermissions, the total duration usually reaches between 2h15 and 2h30, or more in case of extension. We will explain to you:
- How these 60 official minutes take place
- Why real time is much higher than the time displayed
- Differences between regular season and playoffs
- What happens during extensions and shots at the goal
Let's dive into the details of this time mechanics that makes all the peculiarity of professional ice hockey.
What is the official duration of an NHL game?
The regulatory duration of an NHL match is fixed at 60 minutes of actual play time, divided into 3 periods of 20 minutes. We insist on the term "effective time" because the chronometer stops automatically at each interruption of the game: whistle blow, marked goal, penalty, or exit of the pallet outside the limits of the rink.
This rule fundamentally distinguishes hockey from football where time continues to pass. The three periods are separated by two intermissions of 17 minutes each in NHL, during which the surfacer (Zamboni) redones the ice surface.
How do the three 20-minute periods take place?
Each period disembarks with a commitment at the centre of the ice rink. The 20 minutes pass only when the pallet is at stake. As soon as an arbitrator whistles a fault, an out-of-game or any stop, the time freezes instantly.
The teams change between each period, which balances the playing conditions. During each period, we usually observe 8 to 12 stops for various reasons, 2 to 4 time dead commercial mandatory, and constant line changes every 30 to 90 seconds.
What happens during breaks between periods?
The two 17-minute intermissions are both strategic and technical. The surfacer performs its meticulous work: it scratches the top layer damaged by the skates, recovers the accumulated snow, then deposits a thin film of hot water that freezes quickly to create a perfectly smooth surface.
In the changing rooms, coaches adjust their strategy, analyze statistics live and motivate their troops. Players moisturize, recover and focus mentally over the next period. For the public, it's time to stretch your legs and enjoy the animations offered in the arena.
What is the actual total duration of a NHL game live?
Let's do the math together. If we add 60 minutes of actual play, 34 minutes of intermissions, 15 to 20 minutes of pre-game warm-up and about 45 to 60 minutes of cumulative play stops, we arrive at an average duration of 2h30 to 2h45 for a live game at the stadium.
This estimate may vary depending on the number of penalties, match intensity or game fluidity. We therefore recommend that you allow at least 3 hours if you attend a game in person.
Why does an NHL match last more than 2 hours?
The answer is: interruptions. Hockey accumulates dozens of interruptions per period. Each engagement after a goal takes about 30 seconds. Each pallet output requires repositioning. Each penalty involves a discussion with the arbitrators and a team adjustment.
Commercial dead times also add 2-3 minutes per period. These mandatory breaks allow broadcasters to sell their advertising and largely fund the show.
Game stops that prolong the game
The main causes of interruption are out-of-games (10-15 times per game), prohibited clearance or hereng (5-8 times), penalties (6-8 on average), video revisions (2-5 minutes each) and injuries. Each stop mechanically extends the actual duration of the match.
What is the duration of a game with extension and shots at goal?
Regular season: A 5-minute extension period is played in 3 to 3. The game ends as soon as a team scores. If no one scores, we go to the shots at the goal: 3 shooters per team initially, then duels until decision. Total duration: about 2h45 to 3h.
In playoffs: The extensions are played in 5 to 5, in full periods of 20 minutes, until a team scores. There's no limit. The record belongs to a 1936 match: 6 extension periods for a total game of more than 5 hours!
What is the difference in duration between regular season and playoffs?
The regular season favours efficiency with a short extension and shots at the goal. Average duration: 2h30. Playoffs radically change the deal with infinite extensions guaranteeing a winner to merit. Average duration in playoffs: 2h45, but can reach 4h or more.
| Type of match | Extension | Shooting at goal | Average duration |
| Regular season | 5 min (3 vs 3) | Yes | 2h30 |
| Playoffs | 20 min (5 vs 5) × unlimited | No | 2h45 |
How long does an NHL match last on TV?
Broadcasters integrate their own advertising and analysis ranges. typically count 15 minutes ahead, 2h30 to 2h45 in the game and 10 to 15 minutes after the game. Total: 3 hours of television programming for a regular season game without an extension.
Comparison with other sports (football, basketball, rugby)
Football lasts about 2h in total, NBA basketball between 2h and 2h30, and rugby about 1h50 at 2h10. Hockey is thus positioned in the high range of collective sports in terms of actual duration, at the same level as a baseball game (3h on average).
Tips for enjoying a live NHL match
Come 45 minutes before the kick-off to enjoy warm-up. Hydrate yourself and eat before, because three hours on a seat is long. Dress comfortably with a light jacket (temperature between 15-18°C). Take advantage of the intermissions to stretch and participate in the animations. Stay until the end even if your team loses, the last minutes are often exciting.
How long do you plan for an NHL game?
At the stadium: Schedule 4 hours in total (arrival 45 minutes before + 2h45 of match + departure). In playoffs, count 4h30 to 5h.
On TV: Block 3h for a regular season game, 3h30 for playoffs.
Ice hockey remains one of the most exciting sports to watch live. While total duration may surprise neophytes, the intensity, speed and constant rebounds largely compensate. We strongly encourage you to live at least once the experience of an NHL match in person!
